Project History & Description

In 1998, the principals of Indus Hotels identified this site as an ideal location for a hotel. The site, which was originally comprised of a vacant land parcel and a 107-year old dilapidated historic building, is located at the entrance to the historic Short North District in downtown Columbus.

This challenging $20 million project presented a central problem: how to convert a dilapidated 107-year-old building into a modern hotel without losing the historic feel of the building. The final design, which called for the demolition of the existing building and the construction of an underground parking structure, required approval from the Historic Resources Commission. The solution, which received commission approval, was to incorporate the brick façade of the existing historic building into the elevation of the new hotel. This innovative approach involved masonry contractors removing 26,000 bricks, numbering and photographing them, and reassembling the new façade - in only 10 weeks.

In operation since October 2000, the Hampton Inn & Suites is a 179-room, 168,000 square-foot hotel, with ground floor retail space, underground parking, a second-floor pool, conference center, and five presidential suites with sweeping views.
